Personal data protection in the Republic of Benin

The protection of personal data in Benin is governed by Law No. 2017-20 of 20 April 2018 on the Digital Code in the Republic of Benin, as amended by Law No. 2020-35 of 06 January 2021. This law aims to guarantee respect for individual privacy and to regulate the use of their personal data.

The Personal Data Protection Authority, a body set up to ensure the responsible and consensual use of such data, aims to raise the awareness of those involved in the digital sector (data controllers), who will bear the brunt of heavy responsibilities and penalties.
